Magic Bus was founded by Matthew Spacie in 1999.Matthew first came to India in 1986 where he worked as a volunteer with The Sisters of Charity in Calcutta. Following his graduation and a number of management positions in the UK, he was posted to India ten years later at the age of 29, as the Chief Operating Officer for Cox Kings, then India’s largest travel Company. In February 1999, Matthew initiated Magic Bus, working with children dwelling on the streets outside his office. Having played international rugby for India, he used this as his platform to engage these young men and he started a rugby team called ‘Magic Bus’. The epiphany was the impact on these boys sport and he resigned from his job in 2001 to work fulltime for Magic Bus.

Magic bus now is a well-known non-profit organization that seeks to close this gap between poverty and opportunity. It uses the power of sports to impart essential life skills in children and youth from marginalized communities and enables them to become active and contributing members of society with dignified livelihood options or jobs. Ranging from education and gender equality to health and employability, important life skills are imparted to children by the youth of their own community, through various on-field games and other activities. Magic Bus is a pioneer of sports for development approach in India. It has created change for 2,50,000 young people through more than 8,000 youth leaders across the country Playing for humanity a charitable foundation formed by Bollywood star Ranbir Kapoor and Abhishek Bachchan has extended support to Magic Bus India Foundation through a charity football match played between cricketers and members of the film fraternity
